"...for an eternity my tallies weighed by torment and truths,
to have this Stone answered by the Mirror of my soul..."
to have this Stone answered by the Mirror of my soul..."
~Kareas, Speritanian composer
Speritan is the most populous nation in Ul-Zaorith and has long been
its undisputed military leader. It has, at one point or another, tried to conquer
every nation in the world, and has at times held Lisdan and Tirivahn as vassal states, and even tried to lay claim to the entire Western Continent. Full of swampy, wet forests,
tangled briar crevices, and marshy boglands, their cities are built with some of the densest populations. Still, in their wilderness, many subsist off the lands—if they don't get devoured by dragons first.
Speritan's people descended from bears, and remain territorial, jingoistic, zealous, and pious. With a polygamous ideal and women who can bear litters of 2 to 8 every two years, they've needed to develop other measures of population control. Part of this is the high infant mortality rate, especially among the lower classes, where a lack of magic limits them to local medicine. However, they also select any number of their male children to sell to the Cutter to make them into eunuchs, which are regarded almost as a third gender. Despite their (at times) aggressive world politics, they are very welcoming to foreigners, and were the first to recognize a system of inter-racial marriage. Visitors come from around the world to observe their national sport of Valan, their tradition of opera theatricals, and their tournaments that feature kolead racing, jousting, and duelling—not to mention a wide variety of street foods.
