Terminology:
Amefeb: P7. Amefeb is very common and is generally found in massive veins, which can be broken down into smaller, more usable forms of metosomatics. While stable in energy output, the amount of energy that Amefeb gives off is not enough for any huge enterprise. It is however, due to its safe and low level of power, and its wide availability extremely useful in smaller tools, like computers, medical implements, cooking equipment, automatic doors, small robots and other gadgets. It functions well under high heat, and is resistant to all acids except for hydrofluoric. Exposure to hydrofluoric acid causes the Amefeb to shatter into fragments and imbed themselves in the closest source of metal.
Anhedral: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the GMH Stellar division. Anhedrals are large and slow-moving, but incredibly resistant to damage and known for their smooth controls. They are used for transporting goods, such as cargo, supplies, phenocryst, metosomatics, prisoners, and colonists.
Aquamar: P7-8. Aquamar is one of the unstable Metosomatics, and fluctuates between a power level of 7 and 8. They are round in shape, generally 18’ across and prismatic in appearance. They are used in levitation systems, especially for keeping Out Posts, colonies or machinery suspended in certain environments to that they are able to function. This levitation has a constant slight movement either from side to side or up and down due to the instability of its metosomatic. Those who work or like on them on a regular basis say that each Aquamar has its own “cradle” that is part of its charm. You get used to the rhythm. They say that those who grow up on the Aquamar Stations are incredibly mobile and agile.
Aureoles: An Aureole is a civilian base or ship controlled by or under leadership of the UFA. Aureoles compose about 80% of the remaining human population, and an unknown number of alien species who have come to live on Aureole Worlds.
Batholith: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the UFA. The Batholiths are designed as colonist ships. They are not particularly fast moving, but are able to jump light speed, and are a meagre but comfortable ride. They are strictly government regulated and carry basic supplies and equipment to initiate colonies. The Batholiths are actually designed to – once settled on the target land space – to unfold and develop as the core of the new colony, using metosomatics to initiate gravity control, atmospheric pressure, and other required living conditions.
Carat: A Gear’s Carat is his wins ratio. For every win, the Gear gains a Carat, for every loss, the Gear loses a Carat and ties award no score. Therefore the Gears with the highest Carats are the ones with the most wins and the least losses. There is a belief among many of the Gears that the higher one’s Carat becomes the more power he or she can manifest in the Neural Arenas.
Core: A Core is the state of a Gear outside of an arena. They are bald and unexceptional in physical features, with no cybernetics or immunity implants. Each Core has a distinguishing tattoo marked on his or her face which enables them to be recognized with their alternate Gear form.
Diaap: P10. Diaap is the rarest and most coveted form of Metosomatic. Not only does it have the highest power output, it is also the most stable and hardest to damage. It is ideal for running massive areas requiring power, such as Way Stations and Arks. It is long-burning, stable output energy that can handle mass re-routing to other systems. It also has the ability to stabilize terra forming machinery.
Emermay: P7. This green metosomatic is rare and highly valuable. It produces a stable energy that is highly resistant to wear and the effects of other metosomatics. It is small and prismatic in appearance and powers personal or portable stasis systems, enabling those who travel outside in raw space to have air, pressure resistance and temperature control.
Erghul: One of the alien races encountered in the deep spaces. Erghul have a peaceful standing with the UFA, but do not conform to all of their bylaws. The racial slur for an Erghul is a Ghoulie or Ghoul. The Erghul are the ones who perfected the process of forming phenocryst into metosomatics. The names of the types of phenocryst are words of their language that refer to their gods.
Euhedral: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the GMH Stellar division. The Euhedrals are meant for temporary or quick transport. They are capable of crossing vast distances at reasonable speeds and can affect light speed. They are used to transport paying viewers to Arenas for Gear Combat, as well as basic transport. There is a system of Euhedrals that traverse the main points in the galaxy on which people can buy passage to arrive at various key ports. To arrive at more remote locations, individuals need to then hire out a private ship (either another Euhedral, or a Scree, or in limited locations a Lacolith).
Garjan: P6.5-7.5. Another very common metosomatic, Garjan gives off a far-reaching light of red to brown colour. It is flickering or fluctuating in brightness, but runs for a long time. Occassionally it develops a blockage of energy, causing it to not only short out, but to short out any other metosomatic within its normal field of light. This is easily remedied by feeding the Garjan olivine or pyroxene. Frequent feedings of Hornblende can prevent these shortages. It is used in flares, lighting within bases, portable lamps and any other situation in which artificial lighting is required.
Gear: A genetically modified human with the ability to manifest powers, abilities or supplies within a Neural Arena’s field. The process has made them superhuman in a Neural field, but in their Core forms they tend to be weak, dull, susceptible to disease and lethargic. This enables them to be easily controlled by their owners. Some have developed more functioning capacity outside the Arenas, and most Gears attribute this to their Carat rating.
Genetically Modified Humans: Also called the GMH, is an organization independent from governing bodies in the universe. It was initially a pharmaceutical company that merged with a scientific institution to study the possibility of simply modifying humans to treat and prevent disease. Their discoveries led to the creation of the Gears and the Neural Arena Systems. The sub-corporation of the Genetically Modified human Projects or GMHP is now in control of organizing all Gear fights, and Arena maintenance, advertising and attendance. They work co-operatively with the UFA. They also control corporations responsible for production of everything from food and clothing to machinery and medicinals.
Independents: Nearly all Independents are outlaws, as they are individuals acting against GMH or UFA guidelines. Many Trassis, traders, bounty hunters and criminals are Independents. They are differentiated from Pseudomorphs as they typically act by themselves or with a small crew, and do not usually have any base outpost or way station that is their home.
Lacolith: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the UFA. The Lacoliths are medium sized ships meant for travel. They have ample storage space and require a fair number of personnel. They travel the galaxy stopping in at outposts, way stations, salvage stations and the like checking in on Aureoles and collecting taxes, enforcing the law, and working treaties. They occasionally take over Independent ships they cross and confiscate material or make arrests.
Llamallar: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the GMH. The Llamallars are also called Arks, and are travelling living stations. Like ooliths they have all manner of civilian life and security, but these ships are cruisers, travelling through space. The Llamallars not only patron outer regions of space, they are also ambassadors for the GMH Trading division, or the UFA officials. They typically have a higher ratio of non-human races living aboard them, and are often centres of education of training, and meetings for a multitude of organizations who prefer the concept of a meeting place that is less predictable in its co-ordinates. They are typically well-outfitted with armed sentinels.
Metosomatics: A series of energy powered creations using forms of phenocryst. So far there have been 14 varieties detected and fashioned: Turdec, Pejun, Peridaug, Garjan, Amefeb, Emermay, Sardonaug, Tourmaloc, Zirdec, Aquamar, Topanov, Rubjul, Saphsep, and Diaap. I.e. The verna gonna dark it cuz sheni Saphsep worn out.
Neural Arena: A gateway space used in the network of Neural Arena Systems. There are both physical seating spaces around these Arenas to watch the fights, and they are also broadcast encoded to those who pay for viewing. These spaces have a maximum of 6 Sieves, and an open space that has been cleared for combat. These Neural arenas are set on travelling satellites, asteroids and way stations throughout the galaxy.
Neural Arena Systems Sensors: usually called NASS, the computer program that keeps status readings on the goings on of a battle. The NASS translates the neural activity of the Gears and projects a field that enables the spectators to see what the Gears are manifesting and seeing within the fight. The NASS possesses limited A.I.
Oolith: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the UFA. The Ooliths are also known as Way Stations, and are basically floating cities. The Ooliths use gravity systems to remain in fixed locations, but are otherwise completely man-made living bases. As a home base for workers, citizens and officials, the Ooliths are perfect stopping points for those needing to resupply, rest or pit stop on their way to somewhere else. Since they are mainly residential they are very well-regulated and peaceful locations. Fighting on an Oolith comes with strict consequences. Because of their safety and numbers of people, banking houses do well based on Ooliths. They are typically well-armed with UFA soldiers.
Pejun: P5.5-6.5. Another of the more concentrated, lower levels, Pejun is too instable for long-term use. For short-term use it can be used in a hand-held type weapon like a laser gun called a Jun. These weapons cannot be gotten wet with water or they will melt and decompose into crystal-like substances that will embed in whatever organic matter was closest – such as the hand that holds it. The laser-like beam that it can fire in short bursts is able to bend around corners and angles if it is set on targeting. The entire weapon glows brightly in any of a variety of bright colours and cannot be cloaked.
Peridaug: P6.5-7. This green metosomatic is compact, thick and wedge shaped with an unstable but potent power level. Because of its short range and instability, it is only used in hand held weapons referred to in slang as Dogs. These weapons fire a short blinding flash of green light that melts whatever it lands on. The melting substance is sticky and hard to remove once it adheres, and is good for opening holes in doors, melting opposing weapons, eating holes in people’s flesh etc. The body of the Dog itself is transparent and it can be cloaked to not be picked up by machinery or scanners.
Phenocryst: The crystal-like energy matrix found in the galaxy. Depending on its size and purity, and the groundmass in which it developed, it can be fashioned into various forms of Metosomatics, which are used to power everything from weapons to cruiser ships.
Pitholith: A class of ship designed and manufactured by the UFA. It is a small fighter style ship that can be manned solo, but can have a maximum crew of 4 people. They cannot travel long distances, but are incredible agile and fast, and comprise the soldier forces of the UFA. When they need to fight physically against alien races or Independent attacks, they use the Pitholiths.
Power Level: Power rating, or P Scale tells you how potent a source of energy a certain substance is, up until the discovery of phenocryst, the highest rating was Pluton-powered machinery and weapons which was highly unstable and extremely dangerous for exposure levels. Pluton was rated as a P4. The phenocrysts are generally rated from 5 to 10 in strength.
Pseudomorphs: Pseudomorphs are any way station, out post, ship or colony that has broken away from the UFA but still holds itself together under some form of localized Independent government or organization.
Rubjul: P9. Rubjul is red or red and white in colour, incredibly dense and extremely heavy. It is used in propulsion systems for powering traveling ships through space. It is usually used in tandem with other Rubjul metosomatics to increase speed and distance in faster ships like the Pitholith and Scree. It is immune to acids, and puts off powerful radiation, which needs to be shielded against. If it is not shielded, it can mutate and become unstable.
Saphsep: P9. Usually massive in size, immune to acids and double-helix in shape, this blue metosomatic has similar applications to Diaap. It cannot be rerouted the way Diaap can, making it unusable by massive colonies or Way Stations. It is generally used as a generator and atmospheric stabilizer for air and heat in smaller locations, like Out Posts, Vernas, Quarries and the like. The interesting thing about Saphsep is that it can be cloaked from being picked up by sensors, enabling independents to keep locations more secret. It also can be recharged, or prolonged in its life by cartridges of Peridaug.
Sardonaug: P7. Sardonaug metosomatics can be compacted into small spaces if need be, so long as they have some sort of container in which to keep them. They produce an off-flowing of a lava-like substance that is incredibly cold and will instantly frostbite anything that touches it. The Sardonaug will only produce so much as it has space for, so keeping it in a small container will prevent it from producing too much. Its glow is alternating between grey, red, white and black, and it will flicker between these colours. It has an immense gravity, and is understandably used in gravity generators to maintain an earth-like level of gravity on Way stations, Out Posts, UFA bases, GMH bases, Arenas and arks.
Scree: A class of ship designed independently and manufactured throughout the galaxy by alien workmen or Independents. The Scree are made of scrap parts and salvage materials, so they tend to be a little less reliable than UFA ships or as easily repaired as GMH models. They are however, the fastest known ship in the galaxy, and are typically armed with metosomatics. They can carry anywhere from 1 to 6 people, and affect a single jump in light speed before they need to replace their phenocryst.
Topanov: P8. Topanov is one of the only metosomatics that gives off no visible glow. It develops in huge veins, and often has a vein of another type of phenocryst growing within it somewhere. It’s immune to both acid damage, does not short out machinery and actually grows harder in fire, making it perfect for powering heavy machinery, such as drillers, excavators, junk haulers and other heavy labour machinery. Due to its lack of radiation, it’s quite safe to handle by hand, and can’t be picked up by scanners, making it easy to cloak and smuggle.
Tourmaloc: P7-7.5. Fashioned round or triangular, the Tourmaloc metosomatics are drawing in nature. They are used in traction beams for their ability to pull other things towards them without causing harm to the object they have fixed on. They are used by haulers, UFA ships, docking systems and machinery. It can produce a delicate beam in a pale pink, yellow or green colour that is fine enough to pick up specific bolts, and as the beam grows in strength and diameter its colour deepens to pull things as vast as other ships, asteroids or small moons closer.
Turdec: P5-6. Turdec, while not very common, is also the weakest form of metosomatic. When a vein can be found, there is generally a font of Turdec to be excavated, but finding these veins is very difficult. It is unstable, and easily damaged by hydrochloric acid, aluminum or water contact. However, it is useful as a hand-held weapon. It is bright blue in colour, and fires a burst of light green light that is effective in shorting out electrical systems, doing shock damage to whomever it hits, putting out lights and shorting electrical circuits. The weapon is small and short-barrelled, making it easily hidden in clothing or luggage. These weapons are called Deckers.
United Federated Alliance: Also called the UFA, is the governing body controlling the galaxy as inhabited by Humans. They have many treaties and standing with alternate alien races to maintain peaceful relations for trade and travel purposes. The UFA currently have alliance with the GMH corporations, the human race, the Erghol race, the Sektaran race and the Burdisshi race.
Zirdec: P7.5. Zirdec, like Topanov, gives off no visible glow. It is fairly common and is usually found in twin veins. They say that if you find a vein of Zirdec, keep digging, you’ll find another. It has many peculiar qualities that make it difficult to use. It gives off a constant level of radiation that can cause havoc on systems, equipment and personal health, unless kept in check with markers of uranium or thonium. It is erosive in nature, and can wear out and weaken other Metosomatics if left in contact with them for too long. Where it comes in handy is that Zirdec is actually able to pick up on all manner of energy fields, including those of phenocryst and metosomatics. It is used in sensors in way stations and UFA bases, as well as in certain independent trading Vernas and in ships navigational systems as a beacon to search out deposits and veins of phenocryst, or to pick up on what sort of metosomatics an enemy base or ship is employing.
